Ekone Oyster Co. has been farming this newest type of oyster for over six years. We are convinced this is the best way to provide the highest quality oyster year round to those who love their oysters.

Simply put, Triploid Oysters have one extra set of chromosomes. This causes the oyster to be sterile in regards to reproduction. The oyster spends its time growing faster with a higher meat yield. Meats are typically firm year round, resembling a “winter” oyster.

Common examples of triploidy in agriculture are seedless watermelons and most bananas. (Remember back when bananas had big seeds?)

Ekone has been farming 4c’s Natural Triploids ™ for a number of years now. These triploids are produced in a hatchery using natural techniques.

Our customers frequently request triploid oysters in the summer months. We are working hard to provide enough triploids for the market. At times it becomes necessary due to production restraints to also sell the normal diploid oyster. As other oyster growers learn the benefits of growing triploids, it will become easier to provide you with the best oysters year round.
